Two years after debuting in China, ALDI officially launched their first pilot stores in Shanghai on 7 June, 2019. The two stores, which are also ALDI’s first physical presence in Asia, celebrated their grand opening and welcomed consumers with interactive activities and special promotions.
Located in Jing’an and Minhang districts respectively, the stores are designed as pilot stores that can be customised and tailored specifically for the China market. They allow ALDI to trial and test innovative retail strategies that bring better grocery shopping experiences to the local community, then nimbly adjust them according to data and feedback from customers.
Designed by Landini Associates, the same team behind the concept fresh ALDI stores in Australia, both stores in Shanghai stock ALDI exclusive brands that are ‘Handpicked for You’ by experts to ensure the products meet local needs. ALDI provides more than 1,300 products across 15 categories that are both locally sourced and imported from all around the world. Categories include Wine & Spirits, Snacks, Beverages, Fresh Produce, Ready-to-Eat, Ready-to-Cook, as well as Personal Care and Pet Care products.
Bringing the world to your plates, products available at ALDI’s stores will include fresh milk imported directly from Australia. In addition, as a tribute to its German legacy, ALDI will also offer the German favourite pork knuckle with sauerkraut and roast potato. Other products within the Ready-to-Eat category include the exciting fusion Sichuan style spicy crayfish salad and the Berliner Bao – German sausage with sauerkraut in a traditional Chinese steam bun. The stores will also feature a bar area where customers can grab one of our products and enjoy them instantly.
To keep up with Chinese consumers’ dynamic lifestyles, ALDI will offer delicious choices of ice cream imported from Australia as well as exclusive locally produced flavours such as black sesame and ginger with white chocolate. In addition, there will be plenty of ALDI’s all-time favourite – wine. Among the collection of wine offered at ALDI is the Maison De La Rougerie Bordeaux AOC, harvested from one of the most prestigious vineyards in France’s Génissac village. Similarly, on the theme of keeping with ALDI tradition, customers can enjoy the weekly "Super Savers", a collection of fresh products with offered at great prices.
Both stores will offer an integrated online to offline retail experience to create a hassle-free shopping experience, including a scan and go function on WeChat that lets customers to skip the queue. In addition, the new ALDI WeChat mini-program will make online shopping even more convenient as it offers its products online with instant delivery service within three kilometres around each store. Consumers in the Yangtze River Delta region can also have products delivered through the mini-program.
The new stores join the constellation of ALDI stores across three continents, which first started in Germany over 100 years ago and has since grown into an international retailer with more than 10,000 stores around the world. ALDI launched in the China market in April 2017 through its cross-border e-commerce store on Tmall, bringing high quality products and a unique lifestyle to more customers worldwide.
